Oil Spill on Amazon Coastal Environments: Review of Mapping and Recovery Techniques

Abstract

Annually, the amount of oil spilled worldwide exceeds 4.5 million tons, most of which coming from oil tanker reservoir cleaning operations. This work objective was to expose the problem of oil spill; to seek the history of the Oil Spill Environmental Sensitivity Charts and their importance as tools for preparing contingency plans and implementing actions for oil pollution incidents. In addition, it sought to address the remediation techniques applicable in environments that have already been affected by such events, and also to demonstrate a case study on the social aspect of oil spill risk. During the researchs, there was the perception that the floodplain and mangrove environments are pointed as the most susceptible to this type of accident, and, in fact, that there is a need to study the variables within these environments for better recovery efficiency.
