Abstract

How much solid waste is generated at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Pará - IFPA - Campus Belém? To answer this question the objective of the work was to do the Gravimetric Composition of Solid Waste produced at the Institute. The research was carried out through 5 gravimetric steps, which consisted of: Survey of solid waste data generated on Campus, Application of the Quarting Method, Interpretation of data obtained by gravimetric composition, establishing selective collection and suggesting composting respectively. The composting windrows were also dimensioned. During a week, 1,139 T of solid waste were produced at the Institute, which were separated and weighed by types, these being: Pet Bottles (3.75 kg), Styrofoam (2.55 kg), Plastic (31.7 kg), Paper (21.75 kg), Glass (3.45 kg), Aluminum (4.4 kg), Wood (5.50 kg), Organic - leaves, wood scraps and food (13.35 kg) and Waste with (54.85 kg). It was suggested, according to the data obtained, a composting yard with 40 windrows with dimensions 2m x 1.125m x 0.45m each and 12 selective collection points on the Campus. It was concluded that the Institute produces a significant amount of plastic, metal and glass, and a percentage of 9.5% of organic waste in gravimetry, making it possible to carry out selective collection and composting, an alternative to generate environmental benefits and health for the community.
